Photographing Owls at Kankakee Sands, Indiana

There’s something about photographing owls that feels more like a quiet agreement than a chase. You wait, you watch, and if you’re lucky, the prairie allows you a moment.

In my latest YouTube video, I head to Kankakee Sands in Indiana — one of the largest prairie restoration projects in the Midwest — in search of owls and the opportunity to photograph them in their natural habitat. This landscape, once drained farmland, has been transformed back into open grassland, making it a critical space for grassland birds and wintering raptors.

Why Kankakee Sands Is Special

Kankakee Sands offers a rare glimpse of what Indiana’s prairies once looked like. Wide open skies, rolling grasses, and quiet roads create the perfect conditions for species like short-eared owls, which rely on open habitats to hunt. Winter brings some of the best chances to observe these birds, especially during low-light hours when they take to the air.

The Reality of Owl Photography

Owl photography isn’t about guaranteed sightings or perfect light. It’s about patience, reading the landscape, and knowing when to step back. In the video, I share what it’s really like to search for owls — the long stretches of waiting, my own mishaps, missed opportunities, and those rare moments when everything aligns.

  • Inside look at my gear and my insights of wildlife photography
  • Some of the other wildlife like the buffalos I encountered at the Kankakee Sands

This trip was a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful experiences in photography come from slowing down and letting nature lead.
